VOLTAGE & PRESSURE - A comparison

Electrical parameters like voltage, current are easy to measure with a multimeter & make a conclusion. We can use sophisticated equipments like Oscilloscopes, Data loggers & laptops to measure various electrical parameters & understand the underlying principles. Without such measuring instruments, it is extremely difficult to "imagine" how "voltage" or "current" looks. To make the understanding little simple, we will be discussing about few similarities between electrical parameters & "hydraulic" (or "pneumatics" sometimes) components. Let us start with VOLTAGE, one of the most frequently measured & understood electrical parameter.

We all know that VOLTAGE is the potential difference that exists between two points. In common sense, we refer to one of the  common points as NEUTRAL or GROUND. In Hydraulics & Pneumatics, the terminology similar to VOLTAGE is PRESSURE. And terminology similar to NEUTRAL or GROUND is RETURN or TANK line.

As we all are aware, power generating stations are generally located very far from the place where it will be consumed, like a house, factory or a shopping complex. The distance can be as less as one kilometer to as far as one thousand kilometers or more.
